The Sugar Freedom Project uses community organizing to help transform Oakland into a healthier, more just place to live for residents most impacted by diabetes, obesity, corporate sugar’s ubiquity, and the soda tax.
The sugar industry’s unchecked predatory marketing and distribution in low-income communities of color has coincided with decades of public disinvestment in these neighborhoods – resulting in East Oakland having the highest diabetes and obesity (“diabesity”) rates in Alameda County.
Sugar Freedom Project has been developing the leadership capacities of community members most impacted by the sugar industry and public disinvestment with the vision to transform the local food system to center communities’ priorities for health.
The goals of the Sugar Freedom Project are:
1. Create the infrastructure, mechanism, and container for consolidating a base of folks most affected by corporate sugar
2. Develop the capacities of neighborhood residents as leaders to influence public and private entities
3. Build cross-community solidarity
