SFP in Action
Since January 20th, our communities’ fears and anxieties have intensified: authoritarian actions from the federal government, loss of funding to essential services, and uncertainty at the local level have many folks seeking new ways of aligning to navigate these challenges collectively.
Sugar Freedom Project’s leaders heard these concerns from their neighbors in Oakland and came up with a plan to address this uneasiness locally.
Within the last several weeks, Sugar Freedom Project convened over 20 representatives from Oakland-based community groups to hold meetings with candidates running to be the next mayor of our city. Despite working across different sectors, with unique insights, challenges, and perspectives, these residents gathered with a unified goal: to ensure that the candidates understand where we are coming from when we call for our city’s leader to join us in:
Defying federal tactics and harmful policies that divide us
Defending our communities and movements
Dedicating to making real structural changes towards equity
SFP members were inspired to put their learnings from the How the City of Oakland Works Resident Workshop Series to action, pressing the candidates on their intentions of navigating City Hall, pushing for actionable solutions that are within their mayoral power, and centering racial and economic equity in their decision-making.
At a time when organizations and community groups find themselves moving in isolation to meet the urgent needs of the moment, these meetings served as an opportunity for us to work together, find alignment, and strengthen our relationships to build power and make our voices heard.
Election Day is one week away, Tuesday April 15. Please vote and remind others to cast their ballot to protect our democracy and our fundamental right to shape the future of our communities.
